Perena Urupa
PERANA
Over the many years there have been many who have come and gone and who have supported the upgrade and continued maintenance of our Urupa, Perana.
On the 26th & 27th Feb 2011 a working bee was held to extend our boundary of the Urupa. With the extension of course comes consents and regulations from the Council.
The council required a trench to be dug and a drainage pipe laid below the old fence line. What a great way to encourage whanaungatanga with a Working Bee.
Work began on the clearing of the whenua by PD Workers . Ti Tree was chopped, shifted and stacked.
Scoria was sourced from the Aldertons pit in Pakaraka and metal from the Pokapu Limeworks. Scoria was to be used to lay under and on top of the drainage pipe. Metal was being used for the road up to the cemetary.
Machinery was bought in (2 diggers, a truck and tractor, and bulldozer) from Pokapu Base Farm, Percy Tipene, Tiari Brown, and Opahi Station.
Fencing material e.g. wire, posts, staples, gates, all donated by Pokapu Base Farm, and various whanau.
Our cooks Karin, Iri and Aunty Ida, spoilt us with a steamed hangi, and pot luck by whanau, ongoing cold ,fresh, water to cool and refresh us all on both beautifu,l stunning days.
As the machinery progressed to complete the trench, and clearing, so did whanau who rallied together to ram posts, roll out wire, strain, battern and nail all day long to ensure that all the fencing project would be completed on time.
Those whanau who weren't involved in fencing, or heavy machinery rallied together to mow, weed, spray and weedeat in and around our lost, loved taonga, with all our tamariki at our heels.
Still to be addressed is the car park which has had some alterations done, and will be a project competed in the near future. Extension to the Kauta to be done also
We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who took part in preparations prior, during and after the completion of the extension.
With all the tautoko recieved, Perana is looking absolutely beautiful and it is without a doubt that this could not have happened without each and every one who participated.
